To facilitate change and improve the quality of life for families, guidance and counseling on all levels are offered.at FPC. Maladaptive models of functioning are identified, and productive and positive alternatives are explored. Choices made by the client are implemented and supported by FPC staff both individually and in groups. Pre-marital counseling is available for couples wishing to be prepared for the stressors of life together and when children arrive.
Knowledge and information are critical to growth. FPC provides a variety of opportunities for both. Paramount are interactive opportunities for parents and caregivers that discuss specific health, social, financial, legal and housing resources with representatives from relevant organization and agencies. Support groups are also part of FPC's commitment. These provide a forum for discussing the psychosocial issues affecting families, possible resolutions to common problems as well as support while the family works through difficulties in school, the workplace, and the community.
A family-focused program of workshops for parents, caregivers and children develops clear and consistent guidelines for child discipline and family functioning as well as appropriate education around child development and reasonable expectations of children depending on their age and cognitive growth. Family focused workshops also provide and support anger management strategies based on individual temperament and family values and goals.
Basic to the adults in many foreign families is the need to acquire better skills at speaking the English language. FPC offers ESL classes at beginning, intermediate, and advanced levels in the morning, afternoon and evening. GED training with the possibility of college acceptance upon completion of the GED certificate is also available. Of equal importance is the possibility of becoming a citizen of the United States. Citizenship classes are offered as well as the opportunity to have documents and letters translated by professionals.
